Credit Unions of Northern BC Pledge Support for Canadian Cancer Society Kordyban Lodge Campaign

 March 25, 2011

The Credit Unions of Northern BC are pleased to announce their $250,000 gift to the Canadian Cancer Society Kordyban Lodge Capital Campaign.

Len Thony, Chair of the Board for Spruce Credit Union states, “Our donation benefits all of the North and if credit unions can assist in making life better for Northern residents, we are only too happy to do so.”

“BC’s northern credit unions have stepped up our fight against cancer,” says Integris Credit Union Board Chair LeRoy Vossler. “We bring an inspired, cooperative group of credit unions to this fight,”claims Vossler. “Cooperation is key. By joining forces, we combine our resources for the benefit of People – a credit union’s most important asset.”

In 2010 over 1200 people from Northern BC stayed in Society lodges in Vancouver, Kelowna and Victoria.

The Kordyban Lodge will provide accommodation for individuals and their caregivers travelling to Prince George for treatment at the BC Cancer Agency Centre for the North. It will serve cancer patients and their families from communities throughout Northern BC.

Northline Credit Unions generous gift of $250,000 is being dedicated to the Northline Credit Union Library. The Northline Credit Union Library will provide Kordyban Lodge clients with a quiet reading space on the second floor of the 25,000 square foot facility.

“The Northline Credit Union Library will certainly add to the ‘home away from home’ atmosphere of the Kordyban Lodge”, says Margaret Jones-Bricker, Northern Regional Director for the Canadian Cancer Society.

The gift from Northline Credit Unions comes close on the heels of the Canadian Cancer Society’s public launch of the Kordyban Lodge Campaign, including the naming of the Novak Family Spiritual and Meditation Room, and the West Fraser Timber Lounge. The Kordyban Lodge also features an activity room, exercise facility, wig and breast prosthetics rooms, and a massage therapy room.

Credit Unions of Northern BC are also major sponsors of the Canadian Cancer Society’s Cops for Cancer Tour de North.

BC’s northern Credit Unions are: Integris, Spruce, Bulkley Valley, Williams Lake & District, North Peace Savings, Northern Savings, and Lake View Credit Unions.

Two of every five of us will be diagnosed with cancer at some time in our lives. With an aging population, the number of cases is projected to increase by 60 per cent over the next 20 years. In British Columbia alone, 20,000 people are diagnosed with cancer each year. More than 1000 of those reside in Northern BC.

Anyone interested in making a donation or helping raise funds for the Northern Lodge should contact our CCS office in Prince George at phone 1-250-564-0885.
