Fort St John, October 14th– As a co-operative financial institution, North Peace Savings & Credit Union’s priority is their member’s financial success and well-being. When the Hudson’s Hope Public Library shared their story about upcoming renovations that would make their location more accessible for community members, North Peace Savings & Credit Union (NPSCU) was eager to join forces to bring these changes to life. Through NPSCU’s Corporate Social Responsibility Program, $13,000 was donated to the Hudson’s Hope Public Library for their renovation project.

Fundraising for the renovation has been an ongoing project for the library for the past 10 years. The library staff and Board are thrilled with the opportunity to complete various renovations that will improve accessibility for seniors and persons with disabilities. The initial phases of the upgrades will include smoothing thresholds, upgrading bathrooms, and installing automatic door mechanisms for both the entrance and bathroom doors. With the current layout, there are barriers that prevent community members with mobility issues from being able to access the library and its full range of programs.

“On behalf of the Hudson’s Hope Public Library, I would like to express my sincere gratitude for the donation from NPSCU,”
expressed Amber Norton, Director of the Hudson’s Hope Public Library. “With their faithful monetary donations over the years, NPSCU has validated their profound commitment towards literacy promotion and community development.” Norton also shared that library visitors will notice significant changes to the library. “We have been able to remove the old carpeting and replace it with an eco-friendly vinyl tile and plank, which allowed us to smooth thresholds between rooms.  We are also changing all of the doors within the library in order to improve accessibility for seniors and persons with disabilities.”

The funding was provided through NPSCU’s Corporate Social Responsibility Program. The program provides support to local based organizations that have broad community support, appeal and impact. Literacy and financial literacy are pillars within the program, making the Hudson’s Hope Public Library an ideal candidate. “The Board of Directors identifies literacy and enhancing literacy in all forms as a high priority,” explained Mitchel Chilcott, CEO North Peace Savings & Credit Union. The funding provided to the library resulted in a twofold effect said Chilcott. “The renovations to the library are not only supporting literacy, but are expanding accessibility to literacy programs to all members of the community.”
