Fort St John, March 16th –Did you know that a credit union in Uganda is referred to as a “SACCO”? North Peace Savings & Credit Union’s (NPSCU) Jackie Bishop learned that first hand in her experience in working with credit unions in Uganda. Jackie was selected to take part in a two week Credit Union Management Coaching Program this past February.

Through an extensive application process, Jackie joined a team of fellow credit union coaches from across Canada to share their talents and expertise to help credit unions in Uganda  provide valued services and benefits to community members in need. Coaches were immersed in the credit union’s local community to enable a greater understanding of the challenges and opportunities found within the African credit union system. After two days of training in Ottawa, Jackie and her partner Anthony (formerly Vancity Credit and working at LGM) travelled to Lira, Uganda where they stayed and provided coaching support to two credit unions.

“It was neat to see that the co-operative principles are a common language, no matter where you are globally,” shared Jackie Bishop, Employee Development Specialist, North Peace Savings & Credit Union. Jackie explained that the two credit unions that she had visited were started eight years ago, both young co-operatives. “While NPSCU is 68 years old and living the co-operative principles with its membership, it was interesting to see the same principles being applied into these newer credit unions starting out and interesting to learn about what they are doing to reach their members.” Through conversation and first –hand experience, Jackie and her team mate were able to share expertise and insight on operations, pricing and western banking practices.

Jackie’s visit to Uganda was not the first time a representative from NPSCU has represented the credit union system outside of Canada. Earlier this past year, Mitchel Chilcott, CEO, North Peace Savings & Credit Union was asked to share his presentation titled Building Strong Relationships in Low-Density Communities at the World Credit Union Conference in Australia. NPSCU is known for its local appeal to its members and the community. Its flexible products and services have worked to simplify and enrich member’s lives
through financial leadership. Its path and success with innovation has presented NPSCU with the opportunity to be a leader and an example for credit unions around the world, putting the North Peace and Northern Rockies region on the map.
