North Peace Savings Gives 5K to Women's Resource Society

Just in time for Christmas, Fort St. John Women Resource Society receives a $5,576 gift from North Peace Savings and Credit Union

Fort St. John, Dec 17 – The shelves are looking full at Fort St. John Women's Resource Society this month, thanks to a $5,576 donation from North Peace Savings and Credit Union. The gift will help improve the Society's outreach store, and provide much-needed supplies for the Society's back-to-work readiness program.

"It is an honour to present this $5,576 gift from North Peace Savings and Credit Union," says Janice Van Dolah, Manager of Marketing and Community Investment. " North Peace Savings is committed to the well-being of our member communities, and this gift will have a genuine impact on the lives of so many struggling women in Fort St. John."

The Women’s outreach store serves an average of 70 different women a week, providing free clothing, hygiene products, household essentials, baby needs, non-perishable food items and more to women who self-identify as in need.  But staff at the society also build relationships, connecting women to gateway services, such as their newly developed back-to-work readiness skills program. The program helps low-income and under-skilled women, including single mothers, enter or re-enter the workforce.
"We are so grateful for this generous donation," says the society's Executive Director, Emily Goodman. "It's a cold winter, and bills are tight. Some of the women we work with are homeless, but others are working poor.  Many are single moms who just can't make ends meet, even with minimum wage jobs. If we're able to cover the basic necessities through the outreach store, they can stretch their dollar. That opens up better opportunities for their children and themselves - opportunities like our back-to-work program."

For individuals who would like to help, the society also has a family sponsorship opportunities, where members of the community can help support individual single moms through hampers. To learn more, call the Fort St. John Women's Resource Society at 250-787-1121.
