North Peace Savings and Credit Union Gives Back to Local Communities Through Social Responsibility Fund

Fort St. John, BC February 14th, 2012

North Peace Savings and Credit Union (NPSCU) recently had the opportunity to allocate a portion of funding from its 2011-2012 Social Responsibility Budget to organizations and groups within the three communities in which it serves. A total of $24,500 was distributed between the following groups located in:

Fort St. John and Area:

  • Fort St. John Community Enrichment Centre- Programs for adults with special needs
  • School District #60- Secondary Gifted Program
  • Baldonnel School Parent Advisory Committee- Wheelchair accessible playground
  • North Peace Cultural Society- PlayArts preshool program
  • Fort St. John Skatepark

Hudson's Hope and Area:

  • Hudson's Hope Public Library Association- Library expansion

Fort Nelson and Area:

  • Fort Nelson Community Literacy Society- Adult Learning Centre

In addition to the funds distributed above, and for the second consecutive year, the Social Responsibility Committee asked the membership to vote on the allocation of approximately $30,000 of the Social Responsibility Fund. Members voted for one of seven selected local organizations they would like to support. Below is the breakdown of the selected organizations and the dollar amounts they received on February 7th, 2012 at the Credit Union's Annual General Meeting:

  • Fort St. John Salvation Army    $5,472
  • Baldonnel School Parent Advisory Committee, Wheelchair accessible playground    $4,256
  • Talyor School, neghbourhood School playground update    $4,104
  • North Peace Justice Society    $3,496
  • Fort St. John Success by 6    $2,280
  • Fort Nelson Community Literacy Society    $1,900

North Peace Savings allocates 4% of its operating funds annually to support eligible community groups and organizations who apply for funding for various projects and events through its Social Responsibility Committee. Chief  Executive Officer Mitchel Chilcott states "Through our Social Resposnsibility Committee we strive to strengthen our communities while enhacing the lives of our Members."  This Social Responsibility Funding is in addition to what each branch of NPSCU distributes into its communities each year through various donations and sponsorships on an annual basis. Mr. Chilcott goes on to say, "Giving isn't just a one-time thing for us, or even a once-a-year thing for us, it is at the heart of our co-operative principles."
