Northern BC Foodbanks Filled with $10,000 Donation from North Peace Savings & Credit Union

July 4th, 2016 – Shelves, fridges and freezers at four foodbanks in Northern BC have been topped up thanks to a generous donation from North Peace Savings & Credit Union (NPSCU).

Local foodbanks have noticed a significant increase in people needing their services, diminishing their food supplies at a faster rate. Without an increase in donations, foodbanks in the area have been left with bare shelves and empty fridges. NPSCU is hoping that a $10,000 donation will help re-stock four local foodbanks from the regions that it serves:

• Women’s Resource Society Foodbank - Fort St John
• Friends of Hudson’s Hope Society Foodbank – Hudson’s Hope
• Fort Nelson Aboriginal Society Foodbank – Fort Nelson
• Networks Ministries Foodbank – Dawson Creek

Phallon Stoutenburg, Outreach and Housing Coordinator for the Fort St John Women’s Resource Society was excited to share how these funds will help with a current project. “We plan on matching these funds with a program we have begun with the Child Development Centre that faces food security issues with families with children under the age of six. This program will grant grocery cards to provide food such as perishable items that families can’t access at the foodbank – funds will be able to stretch even further with NPSCU’s donation.”

“We will now be able to fill the fridge with meat,” shared Patti Campbell, Administrator for the Friends of Hudson’s Hope Society. “We have been impacted by the economy and some of our supply levels had reached a critical point.”

Jacqueline Janssen, Program Director of Networks Ministry explained that the economy has caused a greater need for their services in the community, but coming together can help alleviate the stress. “It is the community working together in this way that minimizes the negative impact of poverty and food shortage. It was North Peace Savings & Credit Union that approached us wondering how they could help. Clearly they are community minded. Amazing!”

This investment was made from NPSCU’s Corporate Social Responsibility Program. “We support our communities at all times, including changing times,” mentioned Mitchel Chilcott, CEO, North Peace Savings & Credit Union. “NPSCU ensures we invest in ways that are relevant to the current and future needs of the regions we serve.” This donation will ensure food banks can continue to meet the needs of community members.
